Ane (Stool) by Troy Backhouse
2014 - 2015, Platinum A' Furniture, Decorative Items and Homeware Design Award Winner
My goal was to come up with a relatively simple to manufacture design that appeared complex but was derived from basic geometric shapes. The circle formed the basis for the design.
Ane stool is a solid timber stool with a powder coated steel frame. The seat is formed through the unique use of multiple pieces of one shape of wood positioned and cut in a dynamic way. The simple placement of three geometric circles allows the Ane timber stool to be cut in a way to give the appearance of a complex furniture piece.
Design Challenges
Different frames were tried during development to come up with an easy to manufacture, durable frame that did not diminish the aesthetics of the seat.
Production Technology
The original concept was based on bending aluminium rectangular steel tube but as the design progressed for a softer visual finish, timber was the preferred choice.
